How I work

How I work

How I work

I've been working with contractors, consultancies, agencies, studios - whatever people have called themselves - for almost my entire career in some capacity or another.

I've been a contractor myself, run my own design/dev shop, and worked with dozens of service providers and pricing models.

This is how I work, how I price, and why I choose to work this way.

One flat rate, one month minimum

I have a flat rate for a day per week worth of work and you'll work with me for a minimum of one day per week for a month. During that month you're free to send me any design projects you have and I'll work through them.

The more days you sign up for, the more work I'll be able to get through for you and the more active requests you can have open at one time.

Prior to working together we'll have a brief call or email thread to talk through what you're looking to accomplish in working with a designer as well as any timelines or deadlines you may have. From there I'll recommend the plan best suited to meet your goals and timeline.

Minimal meetings for all, async discussions

During our engagement we’ll keep meetings to a minimum, specifically focused on discussing or briefing a new, larger task or conducting a review when necessary. We’ll conduct reviews and keep in touch over Slack, Discord, or Telegram as well as direct comments in Figma or Google Docs.

What are you getting?

In addition to design work, when working with me you'll also get access to a number of talented people I work with who specialize in animation, 3D, app development, illustration and more. Small, simple add-ons like a logo animation can be added to your project free of charge.

Why this model?

Once I started working with this model and my clients and I saw the results I quickly converted all my remaining hourly engagements over to it for a few reasons:

  • Simplified budgeting for both parties
This one is self explanatory. Know how much you're spending per month on design.

  • Outcomes over hours tracking
When I changed over to this model, clients suddenly no longer cared if something took five days or five minutes. Everyone's focus shifted solely to creating the best end product we could create together.

  • Speed and efficiency are incentivized
When outcomes and minimal meetings take priority over hours billed, work rarely expands to fit the time allotted to it. Quick turnarounds mean quicker reviews, approvals, and uses of everyone's time. Many freelance designers feel disincentivized to complete work quickly on hourly engagements because they're effectively punished for being efficient.
